Being a professional performer in the musical arts while teaching the craft is a most wonderful blend of experiences from which much insight can be gained.  I am delighted and honored to share conversations with colleagues and friends who not only have achieved success in the competitive world of performing arts stages, but also in the realm of teaching artists of today and tomorrow.  


Kimberly Cole Luevano, clarinet

With reviews such as “breathtaking…” (The Clarinet), “virtuosic tone and technique”(Tampa Bay Times), “exceptionally sensitive and introspective rendition” (The Clarinet), and “a most skillful artist” (Fanfare Magazine), Kimberly Cole Luevano continually establishes herself as a formidable soloist and chamber musician known for poignant interpretations and inventive programming.  With pianist Midori Koga and soprano Lindsay Kesselman, she forms the trio, HAVEN, “….A refuge for the creation of new music for soprano, clarinet, and piano.”  She is also a founding member of the violin, clarinet, and piano trio, TrioPolis. Luevano’s recordings on the Fleur de Son label, “Bright Angel” (2013) and “Atonement” (2015), received critical acclaim and were considered in the American Grammy nomination process. Her disc of world premiere recordings for clarinet, violin, and piano, TrioPolis One, was released in 2017. Her recording of Michael Daugherty’s “Brooklyn Bridge” with the UNT Wind Symphony was released on the GIA label in 2016, and numerous chamber recordings are available on the Centaur and Albany labels.  Luevano joined the University of North Texas faculty in 2011 and served as a member of the clarinet faculty at the Interlochen Arts Camp from 2003 to 2012.   She was Pedagogy Chairperson for the International Clarinet Association from 2012-14 and has given acclaimed solo and chamber performances, adjudicated, and taught masterclasses on four continents. Former students occupy performing and teaching positions throughout the United States and Canada. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Luevano studied in Paris as the recipient of a Fulbright Grant. She plays and endorses Selmer Paris instruments and is a D’Addario and Company Performing Artist. Luevano resides in Corinth with her husband and two teen-aged sons…who still like to watch TV with her.


Previn Moore, tenor

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, American tenor Previn Moore's early artistic education began at age 11 when he was accepted at  the prestigious School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati. It was there he developed a deep love and passion for Musical Theater and Opera, while receiving a cautious, but vigorous vocal training. Upon graduation at age 18, Previn received a scholarship to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, majoring in Vocal Performance.  At Indiana University, he studied with the Norwiegan bass-baritone Roy Samuelsen. From 1987-1989 he was one of the first Young Artists at Virginia Opera (Norfolk), where he debuted with age 24 as Beppe in I Pagliacci, and sang such roles as Tamino and Monostatos in The Magic Flute.

In 1989 he signed a contract with the Theater in Lüneburg, Germany where he remained 5 seasons, singing opera, operetta and musical theater. He has performed  in opera houses and theaters throughout Germany, Austria,and Switzerland. His repertoire spans from Nemorino (L'elisir d'amore) and The Dying  Swan in Carmina Burana to "Judas " in the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. He can be heard as Robbins, Crabman, and Honey Man, with Maestro Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting, on the  RCA/Sony Recording of  Gerswhin's Porgy And Bess. He has taught workshops in the United States, and is a consultant for the Vocal Music Summer Camps at Auburn University in Alabama. Residing in Vienna, Austria, Previn enjoys a professorship at the Music and Arts (Musik und Kunst) University, mentoring  young, aspiring artists.


Daphne Gerling, viola

Daphne Gerling enjoys an international career teaching, performing, and writing about the viola. She began her research on the 1919 Viola works  as a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge faculty of music in 2005. Her dissertation, “Connecting Histories: Identity and Exoticism in the 1919 Viola Works of Ernest Bloch, Rebecca Clarke and Paul Hindemith (2007) is available digitally through Rice University.  From Holland to Portugal, and New Zealand to Honduras, Daphne’s travels and performances have taken her to 30 universities around the United States, and to 14 countries overseas. In recent years she has been a summer fellow  at Lincoln Center Education in New York, and enjoyed performing on Baroque viola with the Washington Bach Consort, Karlsruhe Handel Festspiele, and the American Baroque Opera Company. She has participated in commissioning projects with composers Libby Larsen and Jorge Variego, leading to American premieres in Tennessee, Georgia, Los Angeles, and in Rome and Cremona, Italy. As a concerto soloist she has performed works by Clarke, Mozart, Hindemith, and Weber in Texas, Brazil, and at the storied Saigon Opera House in Vietnam. As a chamber player, she appears with Dallas’ Chamber Music International and Art Music series, as well as Sounds Modern in Fort Worth. She is currently developing recital projects featuring works by female composers who may have participated in the 1919 Coolidge competition, as well as a solo program of modern compositions. Dr. Gerling studied viola, vocal performance, and historical musicology at Oberlin Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Rice University. She is deeply grateful to have been mentored by viola professors Jeffrey Irvine, Lynne Ramsey, Karen Ritscher, and James Dunham, and to have served as their graduate teaching assistant throughout her degrees. She undertook further studies with Heidi Castleman, Thomas Riebl, and Simon Rowland-Jones. Dr. Gerling’s students currently hold teaching and performing positions throughout the United States, Brazil, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. She is currently Assistant Professor of Viola at the University of North Texas, and Secretary of the American Viola Society. Her website is www.daphnegerling.com.


Jaymee Haefner, harp

Jaymee Haefner’s performances have been described by Daniel Buckley as possessing “an air of dreamy lyricism… interlocking melody lines with the deftness of a dancer’s footwork.” Jaymee holds the Associate Professor of Harp position at the University of North Texas (UNT), where she has taught since 2006. An avid supporter of new compositions for harp, has premiered new works for harp by several composers (Patterson, da Silva, Broberg, Schocker, and Libby Larsen) and has performed internationally (Hong Kong, New York City, New Orleans, Atlanta, Mexico, Czech Republic, Russia). Dr. Haefner chaired the 2011 American Harp Society Institute at UNT and currently serves as the Treasurer for the World Harp Congress (WHC), board member of the AHS, Inc. Foundation, and serves on the American Harp Journal editorial board.   She regularly writes for The Harp Column and The American Harp Journal, and has published two books:  The Legend of Henriette Renié and One Stone to the Building: Henriette Renié’s Life Through Her Works for Harp, and recently had her article about Henriette Renié published by the New Grove Dictionary of Music.  A passionate teacher, she has adjudicated for the Hong Kong International Harp Competition, the AHS National Competition, the Lyon & Healy Awards, the Young Artist’s Harp Competition, and the Italy International Harp Competition.  Dr. Haefner recently taught masterclasses at the Eastman College of Music, the Boston Conservatory, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Virginia Harp Center.  She presented lectures for the WHC in Amsterdam and Sydney, and has led workshops for the AHS in Minnesota, Louisiana, and Utah.  Her violin-harp duo (Crimson), received two grants from the AHS to commission works for violin and harp, and recently released their second recording (Renderings), fusing visual and aural art.  Her performances have been featured at AHS national conferences (New York City, New Orleans, Atlanta) and the WHC (Hong Kong).  Her students (UNT HarpBeats) have been featured in the Lyon & Healy Summer Concert Series (Chicago), the World Harp Congress (Hong Kong), and the American Harp Society National Conference (New Orleans), and the upcoming World Harp Congress (Wales) in 2022.  When she isn’t on stage, Dr. Haefner enjoys capturing outdoor photography with her son, making wire-wrapped jewelry; she also earned her first-degree black belt in 2015.
